Summer Pool Safety

Many families eagerly anticipate relaxing and playing in the pool during summer. But a day at the pool can result in tragedy if the proper safety protocols aren’t followed. Implementing and enforcing adequate pool safety measures can help reduce the risk of accidents during a summer day at the pool.

Pool Safety Tips

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 5 to 14.

Here are some essential pool safety guidelines you should implement this summer:

  • Install fencing. Pools should be surrounded by fences at least 4 feet on all sides, with self-latching and self-closing gates. This can help prevent unauthorized pool access, reducing the risk of accidental drownings, especially among young children.
  • Maintain supervision. Children should never be allowed to play unattended in pools. Assign a designed watcher to actively supervise when people are in the pool. Watchers should avoid distractions like reading or texting.
  • Establish rules. Rules, such as “no running” and “no swimming alone,” should be communicated and enforced. Poor or learning swimmers should never be allowed in the pool alone or without supervision.
  • Check for hazards. Routinely check for hazards, such as electronics and broken glass, that could cause accidents around the swimming area. Ensure pool filters and covers are safety compliant, and there is nothing in your pool that will prevent children from surfacing.
  • Be prepared. Take a course on basic water rescue skills, CPR and first aid to prepare for a worst-case scenario. Ensure your pool has necessary life-saving equipment nearby, such as reaching poles, first-aid kits, life preservers and flotation devices.

As summer arrives, it’s crucial to remember that a bit of preparation can prevent tragedies and keep days by the pool safe and worry-free.
