If you’re in a car accident, reporting it to the police and your insurance company is critical. Here’s a detailed guide on what to do immediately following an accident and how to report it.

What to Do at the Scene of an Accident
After a car accident, check if you or anyone else is injured. If anyone needs medical attention, call 911 immediately.
Assuming it’s safe, take photos of the scene and any damage to surrounding property and the cars involved.
If the accident is minor and you are blocking traffic, turn on hazard lights and move the vehicles to a safer location.
Even if there are no injuries and the vehicles are drivable, call the police to help you get the events surrounding the incident on record. In some states, you must report all accidents to police, even if there are no injuries and only minor property damage.
If you are comfortable doing so, exchange details with the other party. Get their driver’s license and insurance details. If the other party is too stressed to communicate calmly and effectively, wait for the police to arrive.
If there are witnesses, try to get their contact information. They can provide valuable statements later.
Cooperate with the officers on the scene. Provide a clear and accurate account of what happened. Make sure to get a copy of the police report.
How to File a Claim
Contact your insurer to file a claim. Provide details such as what happened leading up to the accident, a copy of the police report, the drivers’ details and any photographs you took.
The insurer will start the claims process and assign a claims adjuster to the case. You can work with the adjuster to determine the extent of the damage.
After reviewing all information and estimates, the adjuster will discuss the settlement options with you.
Review Your Auto Insurance Coverage
The best time to evaluate your car insurance policy to ensure appropriate coverage is before you need to make a claim. Your agent can help you review your coverage and make any necessary adjustments to your policies and limits.
